Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April 1972. Since she was the only child, she was raised also by her maternal grandmother. Scott studied at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. Her dream was to become a English teacher in high school. It was impossible to realize this dream when, after three years of studying and working as a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. She started her career as a spoken-word artist performing her own pieces during live poetry readings. She ultimately joined with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. The singer was initially spotted in the midst of a Roots Show. In the following years, she managed to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to gain experience in the performing arts during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
